Dorm Waste

These two pictures were taken after a weekend (February 4-6) in Medbery block A. Both of these pictures show the type of waste that is generated in one of the smaller dorms on campus. Block A only houses 12 guys and has no common room or hallways. The picture on the top is garbage from just two rooms in A block, each room has two guys in it. It is clear that the garbage is not sorted into any particular order and the type of garbage pail that each is labeled as is completely disregarded. This picture shows the that the students in Medbery are not paying attention to the efforts being put forth by our waste audits and other programs to try and increase recycling. The picture on the bottom was taken from my room over that same weekend and showed the recyclable plastic i used over that same weekend primarily through my water consumption. After gathering all the plastic containers i used this weekend i realized just how much recyclable material i consume on a daily basis. All of those plastic containers were gathered from just one weekend. I drink a lot of water as do many people, and if I generate this much waste on my own just imagine how much an entire campus can generate. I will be keeping up with my water tab every other week to see how much it has grown since then.
