Missouri Landfills and Public School Locations

This map shows the location of Missouri’s landfills versus the location of public schools for the 2007-20008 academic year. Public school location data is from the National Center for Education Statistics, and shows all grade levels. This data was taken from http://nces.ed.gov/and was uploaded to GeoCommons on August 5, 2010 by Bill Greer. The landfill data is from the US EPA. Near major cities in Missouri there are high concentrations of both public schools and landfills. As the map is zoomed in closer, there are many instances across the state where public schools are located just a block or two from a landfill. One such example can be seen in Fluton, Missouri.
Missouri Landfills and Foreclosure Need Score

http://geocommons.com/maps/63685

This map shows the location of Missouri’s landfills versus the foreclosure needs scores for each ZIP code. The foreclosure need scores allow state governments to look at the relative foreclosure risk in all areas of that state. The ZIP Code with the highest foreclosure risk in the state is assigned a score of 100 and all other ZIP Codes are assigned a score relative to that ZIP Code. The foreclosure data is available at www.foreclosure-response.org and was uploaded to GeoCommons on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 by Kunal. The areas with the highest need scores are near the major cities. The zip code with the highest score is in Saint Louis. There is no correlation between foreclosure rates and the location of landfills in Missouri.

Missouri Landfills and Per Capita Number of Jobs

http://geocommons.com/maps/61865

This map shows the location of Missouri’s landfills versus the per capita number of jobs by county for 2003. The job data is from the 2000 census and is available at www.data.gov. The landfill data is from the US EPA. The landfills are located in counties with varying numbers of jobs, showing no correlation between the location of a landfill and a lack of jobs. There are no landfills located in the counties with the least numbers of jobs, per capita.

http://geocommons.com/maps/61866

This map shows the location of Missouri landfills versus the per capita personal income, by county for 2003. The income data is from the 2000 census and is available at www.data.gov. The landfill data is from the US EPA. There are not landfills located in the counties with the lowest per capita personal income or the highest per capita personal income. The landfills are evenly distributed among the remaining mid-level personal income intervals. Therefore, there might be a correlation between landfill locations and mid-level per capita personal income.

http://geocommons.com/maps/61867

This map shows the location of Missouri Landfills verses the resident population, by county for 2003. The population data is from the 2000 census and is available at www.data.gov. The landfill data is from the US EPA. In the eastern part of the state, the landfills are located in counties with low population but in western part of the state there are landfills located in counties with much higher populations, especially near Kansas City. The high weighted mean of Kansas City could be affecting the location of those landfills. In the southern portion of the state there are two landfills which are located in counties with larger populations; this again could be due to the larger weighted means in these counties.
