Bottles & Cans

From the start of the semester my roommate and I have made sure not to throw away any bottles or cans. It was a goal of ours to recycle as much as possible while living off campus. We had to take things into our own hands and bring all of our bottles and cans to Wegman's, instead of just placing them in bins like we did in the dorms. I believe that the 5 cents a can program is a great incentive for people to self-sort and recycle their used bottles and cans. This program is a great way to get more people to recycle, however recycling is the last case scenario. Before you recycle you should always try to reduce or reuse. In this case, to reduce the amount of bottles used it would be better to buy a keg of beer rather than lots of individual cans. A keg is reusable and doesn't require a lot of packaging, whereas cans need to be packaged and cannot be reused without being recycled first.
